The Evolution of Textured Hair Education: 2025 and Beyond

Date:

We’re making progress across the country in tackling hair discrimination and promoting natural, textured hair as something to celebrate. However, when it comes to mandating that stylists be educated on textured hair types, we are still behind.

Which states require textured hair education?

“In 2024 alone, we made significant progress. New York, Connecticut, and California passed legislation requiring barbers’ and hairstylists’ curricula to incorporate textured hair education.

‘Hair is deeply personal,’ said New York State Senator Jamaal T. Bailey (D), who introduced the bill. ‘As a proud husband to my wife and father of two young daughters, I want them to feel secure and attractive in their distinctive textured hair—and in all the ways it is intricately tied to our well-being, personal identity, and how we present ourselves in the world. Individuals with diverse hair textures ought to feel welcome, understood, and protected while seeking hair care services.’

As of January 2025, five states require cosmetologists to receive training in textured hair. These include Louisiana, Minnesota, New York, Connecticut, and California.
Kim Kimble, a celebrity hairstylist, natural hair educator, and founder of the Kim Kimble Hair Collection by HairUWear, points out that there is still a long way to go. ‘More and more people are embracing their natural textures, which makes it crucial for stylists to be well-versed in caring for textured hair,’ Kimble says. ‘I’m still discovering that many hairdressers don’t understand how to work with this sort of hair. While beauty colleges are beginning to understand the value of textured hair education and are working to incorporate it into their curricula, there is still a long way to go. Hands-on training is essential to ensure that every stylist is equipped to serve a diverse range of clients.’”

The Importance of Textured Hair Education

This training prioritizes clients with textured hair, in addition to providing excellent service.

“It’s important for a stylist to understand all hair textures to provide inclusive, high-quality service,” according to Kimble. “Hair is inextricably linked to identity, and textured hair necessitates unique treatments to achieve healthy, beautiful outcomes. Stylists who lack sufficient training run the risk of alienating or harming clients.”

If you want to learn more about how to care for textured hair, Kimble suggests getting hands-on.

“For stylists looking to learn about textured hair, I recommend starting by understanding the different curl patterns—wavy, curly, etc.—and how they each require specific care,” Kimble tells me. “Get specialized instruction, attend workshops, and practice with models to develop skill and muscle memory. Practice, patience, and perseverance are essential for mastering textured hair care.”
