Looking for more information on Greta Gerwig’s Narnia films for Netflix? Then you’ve arrived to the correct location. It feels like only yesterday that we were plunged in the cinematic world of lions, witches, and wardrobes with Andrew Adamson’s adaptation of C. S. Lewis’ famous books—but, friends, that was nearly 20 years ago, and we are ready for a re-do.
In 2018, Netflix revealed plans to revive the Chronicles of Narnia franchise by adapting C.S. Lewis’ seven books into a series.”It is wonderful to know that people all over the world are looking forward to seeing more of Narnia, and that advances in production and distribution technology have enabled us to bring Narnian adventures to life all over the world,” Douglas Gresham, Lewis’ stepson, said in a statement. “Netflix seems to be the very best medium with which to achieve this aim, and I am looking forward to working with them towards this goal.”
Netflix’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, added, “C.S. Lewis’ beloved Chronicles of Narnia stories have resonated with generations of readers around the world.” Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re excited to be their home for many years to come.”
It wasn’t until 2023 that we learnt Greta Gerwig had been tasked with translating Lewis’ popular franchise into “at least two movies” for Netflix, and now the project is getting closer than ever before, with casting rumours exciting fans all over the world.
So we scanned the internet for all the information we could find regarding Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated Netflix adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia.

Yes, it does. Greta Gerwig’s first Narnia film for Netflix will be aired on IMAX on Thanksgiving Day 2026 (November 26, 2026) for an exclusive four-week period before becoming available on Netflix during “the Christmas period.” The film’s IMAX run is anticipated to cover 90 countries and 1,000 auditoriums.
“Our primary aim is to provide our subscribers with exclusive first-round movies on Netflix. “The Narnia IMAX release is a release strategy,” Netflix’s Sarandos explained regarding the release. “We frequently release movies and theatres a few weeks in advance to qualify for awards, meet festival rules, and prime the publicity pump a little. Narnia is a two-week special event, and I believe it stands out from previous runs since few people have an IMAX screen at home.

This is the million-dollar question. Although Greta Gerwig’s first Narnia film will be inspired by Lewis’s original story, the book on which the plot will be based has yet to be formally disclosed.
Gerwig said in a February 2024 interview with Time that she had been working on an adaptation of Narnia before Barbie began shooting. “As a youngster, you accept the entire situation: you’re in Narnia, there are fauns, and then Father Christmas appears. “You don’t even realise it’s not schematic,” she explained. “I’m interested in embracing the paradox of the worlds that Lewis created, because that’s what’s so compelling about them.”
While many people believe that adapting the first novel in the series—a.k.a. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe – similar to Disney’s 2005 epic, Lewis had a tendency to violate chronological sequence. After writing three chronological volumes, the author famously released two prequels, The Horse and His Boy (1954) and The Magician’s Nephew (1955).
Scott Stuber, former film president of Netflix, told Variety in 2023 that while The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is the “preeminent” book, Gerwig was collaborating with producers Amy Pascal and Mark Gordon “to figure out how they can break the whole arc of all of it.” Added Stuber: “There’s such an interesting narrative form [to the Narnia series] if you read all of them.” As a result, many assume Gerwig may be considering adapting one of the prequels first.
Again, there has been no official confirmation from Netflix, but Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia is expected to begin with The Magician’s Nephew. Hair and makeup designer Ivana Primorac, who confirmed her collaboration with Gerwig on Narnia on The Reel Girls Club podcast, said that the upcoming film will certainly adapt The Magician’s Nephew.
“She’s going to start with the first novel, The Magician’s Nephew. And that one has never been done before, and it is wonderful,” Primorac explained.

Another million-dollar question. On April 25, 2025, the Hollywood Reporter revealed that British performer Emma Mackey had been cast in the coveted villain role of the White Witch. This would be a return for Mackey and Gerwig, who previously starred in the director’s mega-hit Barbie in 2023. Mackey is well renowned for her performance as Maeve Wiley in the Netflix series Sex Education. Tilda Swinton memorably portrays Jadis (the White Witch) in the renowned books’ early 2000s film version.
Speaking with E! Online, Mackey hinted that her and Swinton’s Jadises will have a “different vibe.”

THR and Deadline say that Carey Mulligan and Daniel Craig are also committed to the project. Mulligan is thought to play Mabel Kirke, while Craig could be her uncle. There is also speculation that Meryl Streep may have been in talks to play Aslan. However, Netflix has yet to disclose any casting news. Other performers, including Lord of the Flies’ David McKenna, have been observed on location filming, although Netflix has made no official statements.
Until the streamer says something, we’ll take everything with a grain of salt. Previously, it was falsely claimed that Louis Partridge had joined the franchise. A Netflix source verified to Teen Vogue that, despite a now-deleted Deadline post that began circulating on social media, the British actor has not been cast in any part for the film.
That being said, Greta Gerwig is many actors’ fantasy director, including Teen Vogue MOMENT cover star Milo Manheim, Selena Gomez, Brie Larson, and Natalie Portman, among others, so many celebrities have stated their desire—or at least openness—to being cast in Gerwig’s Narnia films.
