One of my favorite fashion editor friends relocated to Williamsburg from Los Angeles earlier this year, and she’s already (rightfully) concerned about how the wind off the river in our Brooklyn neighborhood brings a distinct kind of New York chill. My counsel to her is the same as I give every new East Coast transplant: Yes, your coat is crucial, but Uniqlo Heattech is your salvation.
learning how many fashionistas are covertly wearing this inconspicuous and immensely warm foundation beneath their fashionable winter clothes felt like learning the secret to winter in New York. And, out of all of Uniqlo’s very incredible Heattech alternatives, this ultra-light cashmere-blend turtleneck that I discovered last winter is definitely at the top of my “most essential purchases to survive winter in New York” list.
What distinguishes this thermal turtleneck is that it says luxurious, not “technical base layer.” The delicate knit adds no bulk, and the cashmere blend provides a soft, enhanced feel. The silhouette is slim enough to wear beneath anything from a wool blazer to a thick jumper. This is, quite frankly, the kind of stuff that fashion people collect in all eight colorways — brown is my fave, and you know it’s excellent because it’s constantly sold out and restocked. Set a notification; it’s worth it.
I can’t leave without telling you about my favorite review on the Uniqlo website, which simply states, “My heart was kept warm, too.” I assure, this is truly life-changing winter outfit infrastructure that outperforms its price tenfold. 11/10; I would buy it again if it were ten times the price.
There are also a lot of additional Heattech pieces in my winter rotation (including their “Ultra Warm” line, for when it gets really cold in February), so I’ve included a bonus little winter-proof buying list for you down below. Stay warm outside!
