All About Scarlett Johansson’s $400,000 Engagement Ring (and Why Colin Jost Dumpster Dove for It)

Date:

In 2019, Katy Perry, Jennifer Lawrence, Princess Beatrice, Emma Stone, and Jennifer Lopez were among the numerous celebrities and royals that announced their engagements. In the middle of a swarm of big proposal pieces, Scarlett Johansson stood out with her unusual light-brown rock from her now-husband, Saturday Night Live’s Colin Jost.

The actress showed off her one-of-a-kind jewels at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, where she was promoting Avengers: Endgame. At the time, publications credited the sparkler to James de Givenchy of Taffin (the nephew of that Givenchy), but neither Johansson nor Jost acknowledged its designer. Regardless of its enigmatic origins, there’s no doubting that the 11-carat jewel is a piece of art.

Following their engagement, the couple married in 2020. However, the Marriage Story actress’s “weird” behavior on their first date nearly derailed their relationship. During a December 2025 visit on Today with Jenna & Friends, she talked about the first time Jost asked her out, back in 2017. “We visited an Italian restaurant in the East Village. “It was a lovely date,” she stated. “We had dinner at 8 p.m. or so, and then he said, ‘I’m meeting friends; let’s go get a drink.'” And I hadn’t dated in a long time, so I was like, “I have to go now.” “I need to leave.” She went on, “Later, he said, ‘I totally thought that was it.'” “You were acting strangely,” Johansson continued. “I panicked. I do not know.”

Despite initial misunderstanding, the couple pursued their romance and found their happily ever after. Check out Scarlett Johansson’s gorgeous Colin Jost engagement ring below.

ScarJo’s ring could easily be classified as a boulder, with its solitary diamond weighing an estimated 11 carats. Town & Country speculated in 2019 that it could be a Type IIa diamond, the most rare and pure of all types. The big rock is set in what looks to be a black porcelain curving ring, a hallmark of jeweler de Givenchy’s work.

Colorful stones and bracelets are unconventional, but not entirely uncommon in the celebrity world. Eva Longoria (who received an 8-carat ruby), Anya Taylor-Joy (who wore an emerald), and Penélope Cruz (who wore a gorgeous blue sapphire) are among the other celebrities who looked beyond the white diamond.

Johansson’s previous engagement rings, from ex-husbands Ryan Reynolds and Romain Dauriac, contained white diamonds.

It’s worth approximately $400,000.

You read that correctly—Jost gave his Marvel star bride-to-be a ring worth over half a million dollars, according to Harper’s Bazaar. Its value originates from the scarcity of high-quality natural diamonds in that size and purity. Taffin’s suspected designer, de Givenchy, is known for discretely making unique, high-value pieces—and a ring identical to Johansson’s surfaced on the Taffin Instagram barely a week after her Comic Con appearance.

During a 2019 interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Johansson revealed some specifics about her fiancé’s “romantic” proposal. “He killed it. He acted in a James Bond scenario, which is unusual. “He’s got a lot behind that news desk,” she remarked, referring to Jost’s long-running role as a co-host on Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update.”

When pressed for more information, Johansson stated, “It was very personal.” It was a very amazing occasion. And, more than anything, I believe that when someone tells you that they want to spend the rest of their lives with you, that is a great, special thing.”

According to People, the pair married in October 2020, with a private ceremony at Johansson’s New York home. Despite taking measures owing to the COVID-19 epidemic, they were able to greet loved ones, she explained in a 2021 virtual visit on Late Night with Seth Meyers.Even though our wedding was small and intimate, it was gorgeous, and we were overjoyed to see folks we hadn’t seen in a long time. We really felt so blessed to be able to come together like that. “It felt like it was supposed to be, except for the face masks,” she joked.

Johansson once lost the ring, so her husband searched 12 NYC dumpsters for it.

Johansson misplaced her ring, so Jost went to great lengths (and depths) to recover it. In an episode of Amazon’s Pop Culture Jeopardy!, the Saturday Night Live veteran told the anecdote.

“My wife actually lost her engagement ring,” the game show host claimed, adding that Johansson believed she “accidentally threw it in the trash.” Rather than give up, Jost “looked through 12 dumpsters of trash” near their NYC home in the hopes of discovering it. He went home empty-handed, only for the Oscar-nominated actress to realize it had been in her pocket all along. “It was a great day for me,” the comic joked.
