How Viggo Mortensen’s Surfing Accident Changed 1 Major LOTR Battle

Date:

Before the Lord of the Rings trilogy’s theatrical re-release, Peter Jackson is giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at its creation. The director just disclosed how one of the most famous LOTR scenes was changed by Viggo Mortensen’s surfing mishap. Fans who are eager to rewatch the fantasy trilogy with remastered images and behind-the-scenes glimpses are taken aback by the news.

Peter Jackson details why he had to change one Lord of the Rings battle scene

Following Viggo Mortensen’s surfing mishap, Peter Jackson had to alter a crucial battle sequence in The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. The Academy Award winner remembers a hilarious incident involving Viggo Mortensen in an exclusive clip released by Entertainment Weekly. The actor who played Aragorn had a black eye when he got to the set. As a result, Jackson had to alter the way the epic battle scene in Fellowship of the Ring was filmed.

“Obviously, the problem with these films is that we shot all three simultaneously and then in a mixed-up manner,” Jackson said. The director of Lord of the Rings described how they would begin filming Fellowship on Monday and move on to Two Towers on Tuesday. They would return to Fellowship by Wednesday, and on Thursday they would film the Return of the King.

“So, the other thing I remember is that we all show up to shoot that scene in the mines of Moria,” Jackson went on. Additionally, Viggo had been surfing with the Hobbits over the weekend when he was hurt, as if the board had flipped in midair and struck him in the face.

He avoided that gabe black eye by shooting Viggo from the side instead. When the cave troll joins the assault, Jackson has asked viewers to pay close attention. The fact that Viggo is only visible from one side will be obvious to them.

Filmmaker Peter Jackson has recorded special introductions for the extended versions of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which will be released in theaters on January 16–18 and 23–25, according to Fathom Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures. The box offices of participating theaters and Fathom Entertainment are currently selling tickets.
