Sorry, Puffers: A Wool Jacket Is My Secret to Looking Chic in the Cold, and These 6 Are Impeccable

Woman trying on cropped wool jackets in beige, olive green, and gray, styled for casual chic fall and winter outfits.

When the weather becomes colder and trench season ends, nothing looks or feels better than a well-cut wool jacket. A wool jacket is the quiet hero of my fall wardrobe. It’s structured enough to dress up denim, soft enough to go over a knit, and it makes everything look better right away. This year, it’s all about shape instead of bulk. Boxy cropped cuts, softly belted wraps, and that easy, slightly oversized menswear shapes are all in style.

So, in the name of extensive research (and a little self-indulgence), I’ve been trying on the greatest wool jackets from all over the place. What did the jury say? Each brand has its own unique qualities. COS is the minimalist’s dream since its cropped and cape styles have that hefty, structured drape that makes them feel much more expensive than they are. Zara’s collection is all about trends, with zip-up styles and big shoulders. & Other Stories, on the other hand, is still the best at making rich neutrals and tailoring that makes sense. And then there’s Massimo Dutti. Their wool coats are the epitome of modest luxury: elegant, easy to wear, and the kind of thing that makes you feel put-together right away.

The one thing that connects them all is their mysterious adaptability. A wool jacket can make any ensemble feel planned, whether it’s cropped, large, belted, or boxy. For workdays, I’ve been wearing mine with wide-leg pants and Mary Janes. On weekends, I throw one over a sweater and satin skirt. They do all the hard work for you.

Keep scrolling to see the top wool coats on the market, which I have tried and tested.

I see this COS jacket everywhere these days, and now that I’ve tried it on, I totally get why it’s so popular. The boxy cut gives it a nice, somewhat too big shape that makes it feel trendy right away. COS’s characteristic double-faced wool makes it feel like it has actual substance. It’s structured enough to keep its shape but still soft on the skin. I love how flexible it is. It looks fantastic over a fine roll-neck and pants for work, but it also looks excellent with jeans and loafers on the weekend. This is one of those things that makes you look put-together right away, even if you didn’t do anything.

This wool-blend jacket from Zara’s ZW Collection is no different from the rest of the collection in that it pays attention to detail. The zip front gives it a modern touch that makes it seem a little more casual than a classic buttoned version, yet it still looks smart and sophisticated. The wool blend is thick and soft, which is just what I want when it gets colder. It strikes the right balance between cozy and elegant. I’ve been wearing mine with a cashmere crew neck and fitted pants, but it also looks great over a satin skirt and boots for a night out. It’s one of those rare Zara items that really feels high-end in terms of fit and materials.

Massimo Dutti is one of my favorite places to buy traditional outerwear, and this short wool-blend coat is a perfect example of why. The shape is classic: cropped just above the hip with clean seams and small buttons that make it elegant. The wool blend has a thick, brushed quality that you can only get in extremely well-made jackets. When you wear it open, it hangs nicely. What I like best about it is how versatile it is. You can wear it to work over a fine knit and wide-leg pants, and then on the weekend over jeans and big boots, and it still looks good. This coat will quietly become a standard for years to come.

This would likely be the garment that defines my autumn style, if I were to select only one. It is designed with a minimalist approach, omitting any superfluous details or extraneous embellishments. Nevertheless, it exudes an air of sophistication. Its weight and structure are enhanced by the double-faced wool, which ensures that it rests comfortably on the shoulders and layers effortlessly without adding bulk. The cropped length is perfect for coupling with high-waisted trousers or maxi skirts, ensuring that the proportions are perfectly balanced. It is the type of item that can be worn on a daily basis without becoming bored; it effortlessly completes any ensemble and consistently exudes sophistication. This is the epitome of COS, in my opinion—clean, architectural, and infinitely wearable.
